For years Doctors and health fanatics have been telling us that salt is bad for us, saying that too much of it in your diet can lead to high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes and a long list of other serious health issues. While we don’t suggest going against your doctors advice (if your doctor says to avoid salt, please do) - but recent studies have found that there is no evidence of a direct correlation between high salt intake and health issues like high blood pressure.
In fact, as we’re discovering, salt intake has a number of benefits that we wouldn’t normally attribute to a seasoning. For instance, Time Magazine reported that salt may offer a way for the body to protect itself against bacteria. In fact, studies show that salt may have offered early mammals a way of warding off microbes, giving their ancient immune systems a boost, before we developed antibiotics to take over that job.
Speaking of ancient, the salt mine where Himalayan salt comes from is the world’s oldest and was formed over millions of years ago when tectonic plates trapped an inland sea within a mountain. It’s also why Himalayan salt is found in a mountain, not a sea. This ancient sea salt remains today, in its original, pure form. This area where Himalayan salt is mined has come to be known as the Great Salt Range, where for millions of years this salt was protected from pollutants and outside elements, just waiting to be discovered, which it was, in 1849
Since it’s discovery, Himalayan Salt has been hand mined with very little, if any, refinement or processing, making this unique crystalline pink salt one of the purest salts on the face of the planet.
Normally Himalayan salt is sold as coarse grains like regular sea salt, but it also comes in large salt blocks and you can cook your food directly on this salt slab. Using a salt block (also known as a salt slab) to cook fish or steaks is a great way to infuse the food without adding too much salt.
Not only is Himalayan salt better for you, it also tastes better than table salt. Our bodies treat table salt like a substance that needs to be purged from the body, getting us to drink as much water as possible. Not Himalayan salt- loaded in natural elements and minerals- adding an intensity you wouldn’t find with other types of salt. When cooking with Himalayan salt, your food gets natural flavour without over-salting, it does not produce the burning feeling on the tongue we associate with table salt and is a source of iodine which is a major component to our health.
Remember, everything in moderation! While unrefined salt may not be as unhealthy as we once thought, it’s still important not to over indulge. Salt is meant to only bring out the flavour, to set our interest in the meal. Salt is the guitar solo in a favorite song, it provides so much enjoyment but cannot be the overdone or it is simply too much. Using a Himalayan salt block is a great way to consume salt in moderation. Salt is and should be an important part of your diet, but don’t forget that
it should be a part of a balanced diet.
